Summary

Dayara Bugyal Trek stands as one of India’s most breathtaking high-altitude meadow expeditions. Nestled in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, this trek is a perfect blend of accessibility and raw Himalayan beauty, making it an ideal choice for both novice hikers and seasoned trekkers. Spanning four days of immersive wilderness, this journey unfolds across vast undulating grasslands—or Bugyals—offering panoramic views of Gangotri and Yamunotri massifs.

This trek commences with a scenic 180 km drive from Dehradun to basecamp at Raithal. Over course of 7 to 8 hours, landscape transforms from bustling Shivalik hills into dramatic gorges of Bhagirathi River. Reaching an altitude of 2,299 m, Raithal is a charming cultural hub where trekkers stay in traditional homestays, offering a first-hand look at the architectural heritage and hospitality of Garhwal region.

On second day, physical trek begins with a 4.5 km climb to Gui Camp (2,995 m). This segment typically takes 4 to 5 hours and winds through dense forests of oak, maple and rhododendron. This trail provides a steady incline, allowing for proper acclimatization. Upon reaching campsite, canopy opens up to reveal first glimpses of snow-capped peaks, where trekkers settle into tents for a night under Himalayan stars.

Day three is definitive highlight of the itinerary. A challenging 12 km trek takes trekkers from Gui Camp through Chilapada and onto sprawling expanse of Dayara Bugyal. Reaching a maximum altitude of 3,700 m, summit offers a 360-degree theater of Himalayan giants, including: Bandarpunch (6,316 m), Kalanag (Black Peak), Srikanth and Gangotri peaks.

This ‘Bugyal’ itself is a carpet of velvet green in summer and a pristine white powder-land in winter. After absorbing the magnitude of summit, this trail descends back to comfort of Gui Camp at 3,388 m, capping an 8 to 9-hour day of rigorous yet rewarding exploration.

Final day involves a brisk 4.5 km descent back to Raithal Village. 3 to 4-hour trek down allows for a final appreciation of local flora and fauna. Once back at base, 175 km drive returns trekkers to Dehradun. While this journey concludes, memories of golden meadows and crisp mountain air remain etched in traveler’s soul.
